How to calculate asphalt quantity
Asphalt tonnage calculation is based on three variables: the surface area, the compacted depth, and the density of the specific mix. Getting the density right matters — different asphalt mixes have different densities, and using the wrong figure introduces a compounding error across large areas.
Tonnes Required = Area (m²) × Depth (m) × Mix Density (t/m³) × Wastage Factor

For irregular shapes — driveways with curved edges, car parks with islands, or roads with tapered sections — divide the surface into regular rectangles and triangles, calculate each section, then total them. Add the areas of any kerb haunching or edging strips separately — these are often forgotten but can add 5–10% to the total on narrow paths and driveways.
Step-by-step asphalt calculation
- 1Measure the surface area accurately. Measure the finished surface to be paved — not the excavation. For a driveway, measure the area that will be surfaced, not the area that will be dug out. Note any areas that will not be paved (manholes, drainage channels, planted areas) and deduct them from the total.
- 2Determine the required compacted depth. Depth is determined by traffic loading, not by preference. A residential driveway requires 40–50 mm compacted wearing course. A car park with HGV turning movements requires 100–150 mm of combined base and wearing course. Using an insufficient depth for the traffic loading causes premature rutting and failure.
- 3Select the correct density for your mix. Dense macadam and hot rolled asphalt (HRA) typically have densities of 2.3–2.4 t/m³. Open-graded mixes are lighter at around 2.1 t/m³. Cold lay patching mix is approximately 2.0 t/m³. Using the standard 2.4 t/m³ for an open-graded mix will overestimate tonnage by approximately 14%.
- 4Add 10% wastage minimum. Wastage on asphalt comes from irregular edges requiring trimming, material left in the truck that cannot be raked out, and cutting around features. Machine-laid work on a regular shape requires 5–8% wastage. Hand-raked work around awkward details or on irregular shapes requires 15–20%.
- 5Check delivery minimums. Most asphalt plants have minimum order quantities — typically 5–10 tonnes for delivered material. Asphalt must be laid at the correct temperature (130–160°C for hot mix) — if your order is too small, the material cools in the truck before you can lay it. For small jobs under 3 tonnes, cold lay patching mix is often the practical solution.

Compaction factor: Asphalt is typically laid at 20–25% greater depth than the finished compacted depth — a 50 mm compacted layer is laid at approximately 60–65 mm before rolling. This is handled by the paving contractor, not by the material calculation. Your tonnage calculation should be based on the required compacted depth, not the loose lay depth. The loose volume figure the calculator shows above accounts for this compaction factor.
Common mistakes in asphalt estimation
Using the wrong density for the mix type. A 10% difference in assumed density translates directly to a 10% error in tonnage. Using 2.4 t/m³ (HRA density) to estimate a cold-lay patching mix (2.0 t/m³) results in a 20% overestimate. Always use the density stated in the mix specification or manufacturer's data sheet — not a generic figure.
Calculating loose volume instead of compacted depth. The compacted depth specification is what matters for structural performance — a 50 mm compacted wearing course, not 50 mm of loose asphalt. Asphalt compacts by 20–25% during rolling. If you specify 50 mm loose depth, the finished compacted depth will be approximately 38–40 mm, which may be insufficient for the traffic loading.
Ignoring the tack coat requirement between layers. When applying asphalt over an existing bound surface or between multiple asphalt layers, a bitumen emulsion tack coat is required to bond the layers. Skipping the tack coat results in delamination — the layers separate under traffic and the surface lifts, cracks, and fails prematurely. Tack coat material is inexpensive; the cost of failure is not.
Underestimating the depth required for the traffic loading. A 40 mm single-layer wearing course is adequate for a lightly used residential driveway with cars only. The same specification will rut and fail within 2–3 years if it receives regular van or lorry traffic. Depth decisions must be based on the heaviest vehicle that will regularly use the surface — not the average vehicle.
Ordering hot mix asphalt for a job that cannot be laid quickly enough. Hot mix asphalt must be laid at 130–160°C and compacted before it cools below approximately 80°C — typically a working window of 20–40 minutes in normal UK weather. If your crew, equipment, and logistics cannot lay and compact the delivered tonnage within this window, specify cold lay material or arrange a smaller continuous delivery instead of a single large load.
