How to calculate bitumen quantity

Bitumen estimation starts with the surface area and the correct application rate for your specific product and use. The formula is simple — but using the wrong application rate for your application type is the most common cause of under-ordering on waterproofing and roofing projects.

For irregular surfaces — roofs with hips, valleys, or dormers — divide the surface into rectangles and triangles, calculate each section separately, then total them. Temperature rule: Cold-applied bitumen should not be applied below 5°C (41°F) — the product becomes too viscous to spread at the correct thickness and adhesion to the substrate is reduced. Torch-on membrane application should not take place in wet conditions or when rain is forecast within 4 hours. Using plan area instead of actual surface area for pitched roofs. A roof pitched at 30° has approximately 15% more surface area than its footprint. A 45° pitch has 41% more surface. Not accounting for upstands, details, and penetrations. Flat roof waterproofing requires 150–300 mm upstands at all abutments, walls, and parapets. Applying at the wrong temperature. Bitumen viscosity is highly temperature-dependent. Skipping the primer coat on porous substrates. Applying waterproofing bitumen directly to brick or unprimed concrete without a bitumen primer results in the first full-rate coat being partially absorbed into the substrate.
