What is a concrete floor calculator?

A concrete floor calculator estimates the volume of concrete needed for any slab by applying this formula: Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Thickness (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = Cubic yards. It then adds a waste factor and converts to bags or truck loads depending on project size.

Ordering short on a large pour is a serious problem — a cold joint (where new concrete is poured against partially set concrete) is a structural weakness that cannot be repaired without cutting out and replacing the section. Ordering 10% over is always cheaper than a repair call. This calculator builds that margin in automatically.

How to use this calculator — 6 inputs explained

    Length and width in feet. Measure the actual slab dimensions — do not include the form boards in your measurement. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles and calculate each separately, then add volumes together.

    Slab thickness. Residential foot-traffic patios and walkways use 3–4 inches. Garage floors and driveways carrying passenger vehicles require 5 inches minimum. Driveways with heavy trucks or RVs need 6 inches. Industrial floors use 6–8 inches depending on forklift loads.

Worked examples

Example 1 — Backyard patio (12 ft × 16 ft × 4 in)

Area: 12 × 16 = 192 sq ft
Volume: 192 × (4 ÷ 12) = 64 cu ft ÷ 27 = 2.37 cu yd
Add 8% waste: 2.37 × 1.08 = 2.56 → order 2.6 cu yd
Bags equivalent: 2.6 × 27 ÷ 0.60 = 117 bags (80 lb)
Ready-mix cost: 2.6 × $145 = ~$377

Tip: At 2.6 cu yd, ready-mix delivery is borderline — most batch plants have a 1–2 cu yd minimum with a short-load fee of $50–$150. Call your local plant to confirm minimum order and fee before deciding between bags and truck.

Example 2 — Two-car garage floor (24 ft × 24 ft × 5 in)

Area: 24 × 24 = 576 sq ft
Volume: 576 × (5 ÷ 12) = 240 cu ft ÷ 27 = 8.89 cu yd
Add 8% waste: 8.89 × 1.08 = 9.60 → order 10 cu yd
Truck loads: 10 ÷ 10 = 1 standard truck
Wire mesh: 576 sq ft ÷ 750 sq ft per roll = 1 roll (add 10% lap)

Example 3 — Residential driveway (60 ft × 10 ft × 5 in)

Area: 60 × 10 = 600 sq ft

Cold joint warning: If your driveway pour exceeds one truck, schedule the second truck to arrive within 30 minutes of the first. Fresh concrete sets in 2–4 hours — a cold joint between loads creates a visible crack line and a weak point where water infiltrates and freeze-thaw cycles cause failure.

5 calculation mistakes that cause cost overruns

Ordering exactly the calculated volume with no waste factor. Concrete is sold in 0.25 cu yd increments at most batch plants. A pour of exactly 4.00 cu yd with no buffer means running out with 20 sq ft unfinished if your sub-base depth varies by even ¼ inch. Always add 8–10%.

Not accounting for sub-base variation. A nominally 4-inch slab poured over an uneven sub-base will average 4.5 inches in low spots. Survey your sub-base with a level before calculating — a ½-inch average error on a 20×20 ft slab adds 0.37 cu yd to actual consumption.

Skipping vapor barrier on interior slabs. Ground moisture migrates upward through unhardened concrete and causes surface dusting, efflorescence, and flooring adhesive failures. A 6 mil polyethylene vapor barrier under all interior slabs is required by IRC Section R506.2.3.

Adding water to ready-mix on site. Every extra gallon of water per yard drops compressive strength by 200–300 psi. A 4,000 psi mix can drop to 3,000 psi with excess water addition. If the mix is too stiff, request a plasticizer from the batch plant — not a water add.

Not placing control joints. Concrete shrinks as it cures — approximately 1/16 inch per 10 feet of length. Without control joints saw-cut to ¼ of the slab depth, the slab will crack randomly. Space control joints no more than 2–3× the slab thickness in feet (a 4-inch slab needs joints every 8–12 feet).

How many cubic yards of concrete do I need for a 10×10 slab at 4 inches?
A 10×10 ft slab at 4 inches requires approximately 1.23 cubic yards before waste. Calculation: 10 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) = 33.3 cu ft ÷ 27 = 1.23 cu yd. Add 8% waste: 1.23 × 1.08 = 1.33 cu yd. Order 1.5 cu yd to meet most batch plant minimums and have a small buffer.
How many 80 lb bags of concrete per cubic yard?
It takes 45 bags of 80 lb concrete mix to make one cubic yard. Each 80 lb bag yields 0.60 cubic feet. One cubic yard = 27 cu ft ÷ 0.60 = 45 bags. At $7 per bag, that is $315 per cu yd — versus $130–$180 for ready-mix. Bags are only practical for small pours under 0.5 cu yd.
How thick should a concrete garage floor be?
A concrete garage floor should be a minimum of 4 inches thick for passenger vehicles, and 5 inches for SUVs, light trucks, and heavy use. What PSI concrete should I use for a driveway?
