Mowing Calculator – Estimate Lawn Mowing Time, Cost & Acres Per Hour
Estimate mowing time, acres per hour, and mowing cost. Enter lawn size, mower deck width, and mowing speed for an instant result.
What does the mowing calculator do?
- Total mowing time
- Acres mowed per hour
- Mowing cost (with hourly rate)
How to Use This Calculator

- Enter lawn size (square feet, square meters, or acres)
- Select mower type: push mower, lawn tractor, residential zero-turn, or commercial zero-turn
- Enter mower deck width (inches or centimeters)
- Enter mowing speed, or use the default speed for the selected mower type
- Add an hourly rate to get a cost estimate
- Get instant results: mowing time, acres per hour, and total cost
Formula: Deck width × mowing speed = swath rate cut per minute. Lawn area ÷ swath rate = mowing time.
Mower Speed Reference
| Mower Type | Speed (MPH) | Speed (KPH) |
|---|---|---|
| Push mower | 3 | 4.8 |
| Lawn tractor | 3 to 5 | 4.8 to 8 |
| Residential zero-turn | 5 to 8 | 8 to 12.9 |
| Commercial zero-turn | 7 to 13 | 11.3 to 20.9 |
Efficiency setting: Default 80%. Overlap between passes reduces effective coverage by 10% to 20%. Lower the setting for lawns with frequent turns around trees, beds, or fence lines.
Mowing Time by Deck Size (Per Acre)
| Mower Deck Size | Time per Acre | Pace (Acres per Hour) |
|---|---|---|
| 22-inch push mower | 1 hour 39 minutes | 0.6 |
| 30-inch push mower | 1 hour 13 minutes | 0.75 |
| 42-inch lawn tractor | 31 to 52 minutes | 1 to 1.9 |
| 42-inch zero-turn | 19 to 26 minutes | 2.3 to 3.1 |
| 46-inch zero-turn | 17 to 23 minutes | 2.5 to 3.4 |
| 54-inch zero-turn | 15 to 20 minutes | 3 to 4 |
| 72-inch zero-turn | 9 to 11 minutes | 5.2 to 6.6 |
Mowing Time by Lawn Size
| Lawn Size | 42-inch Push Mower | 46-inch Zero-Turn |
|---|---|---|
| 0.25 acre (10,890 sq ft) | 20 to 25 minutes | 5 to 6 minutes |
| 0.5 acre (21,780 sq ft) | 40 to 50 minutes | 10 to 12 minutes |
| 1 acre (43,560 sq ft) | 80 to 100 minutes | 20 to 24 minutes |
| 2 acres (87,120 sq ft) | 160 to 200 minutes | 40 to 48 minutes |
Unit conversion: Square feet ÷ 43,560 = acres. Square meters ÷ 10,000 = hectares.
Which Mower to Select
| Lawn Size | Recommended Mower | Typical Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Under 0.5 acre | Push mower | $200 to $500 |
| 0.5 to 2 acres | Lawn tractor | $1,500 to $3,500 |
| Above 1 acre | Zero-turn mower | $3,000 to $8,000 |
| Above 15° slope | Push mower or lawn tractor (zero-turn not recommended) | — |
Cost Calculator Inputs
Hourly rate: $25 to $60 per hour (United States average). Flat job rate: $30 to $80 per job (average residential lawn)
Example: 0.12-acre lawn, 21-inch mower, 2.8 MPH, 80% efficiency = 16 minutes. At $80/hour = $21 total cost.
Per-acre rate: Divide the hourly rate by the acres per hour pace.
- 1 acre/hour at $80/hour = $80/acre
- 4 acres/hour at $80/hour = $20/acre
Is this calculator free? Yes. No signup, no email, no payment.
Irregular Lawn Shapes
For triangular, five-sided, or nonsquare lots: split the lot into rectangles and triangles, calculate each section, then add the totals.
Example: 0.3-acre L-shaped lot → split into 0.2-acre section + 0.1-acre section → calculate each separately → combine mowing time.
Robot Mower Comparison
| Traditional Mower | Robot Mower | |
|---|---|---|
| Active time per session | 15 min to 1+ hour | Near 0 minutes |
| Upfront cost | $200 to $8,000 | $800 to $3,500 |
| Best for | Any lawn size | Under 1 acre, simple boundary |
Calories Burned
| Mower Type | Calories per Hour |
|---|---|
| Push mower | 250 to 300 |
| Riding mower / zero-turn | Lower (mower supplies propulsion) |
Mowing Frequency by Season
| Grass Type | Peak Growth Months | Mowing Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Warm-season (Bermuda, Zoysia) | June to August | Every 5 to 7 days |
| Cool-season (Bluegrass, Fescue) | April, May, Sept, Oct | Every 5 to 7 days |
| Either type, off-peak | Winter / peak summer heat | Every 10 to 14 days |
Grass Height Rules
Many United States municipalities and homeowners associations (HOAs) cap grass height between 6 and 12 inches. Violations: $50 to $200 in fines.
Factors That Slow Down Mowing Time

- Hills and slopes
- Trees and obstacles
- Wet or overgrown grass
- Tight turns and narrow gates
- Grass clipping catcher emptying
